More Wild Flowers of Nova Scotia

I don't have a favorite flower, but if I had to choose, irises would be contenders. I spotted these, my first wild iris sighting, a few days ago at Card Lake. I was not expecting to find these, so it was a plesant surprise.

I just love the pink Mountain Laurel.

  1. i love love love 'snake flowers' (the purple wild irises) as we called them. my favourite flowers :) Interestingly enough, we also used to call Tiger Lillies 'Ditch flowers' as they typically grow in the ditches around home (south shore NS).

    Weird huh?

  2. I'd agree with you about irises, Grace - that shape is just so extravagantly beautiful. And very Laurentian too.

  3. Eco-yogini: 'snake flowers' well that's a new one to me! I think these are blue-flag irises, but not sure. I also call tiger lilies ditch lilies, although I prefer the former (sounds more fierce than ditch). I have a good supply of them. Did you know that tiger lilies were edible?

Solitary Walker: Irises are a bit ostentatious, aren't they? Probably one of the most exotic-looking wild flowers in these parts.

  4. I love the irises too...I noticed the pink Mountain Laurel growing everywhere throughout the woods last weekend when we biked through Poppie's old woodlo,t but didn't know what it was called. I too took pictures and planned to look it up but now I don't have to...thanks.
    Love,
    Mom
