Datura: Not All The Excitment Happens During The Day

I am eagerly awaiting the fragrant blooms of my Datura plant. I won it this spring so I have yet to experience the flowers. It seemed to be suck in this state, but a closer inspection revealed a state of unfolding. I think the patience will be worth it. I'll take pictures when the event finally happens!

"Datura is a genus of nine species of vespertine flowering plants belonging to the family Solanaceae." (1) I love that word, vespertine--of the night. In botany, it means the plant opens or blooms in the evening. Evening is also the time of witches, and Datura belongs to that group of "witches weeds" used in love potions and brews. But watch out, not only is it a  hallucinogen, it's deadly.(2)

Datura can be used moon gardens, a magical type of garden that I fantasize about . . . but I have a lot of garden fantazies:)

  1. Vespertine - beautiful!

That's the rub - the seductive stuff is often, unfortunately, deadly too.
